EASY BAKED SPAGHETTI

EASY BAKED SPAGHETTI Makes 8 servings.

1 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
8 oz angel hair pasta
2 small bay leaves
1 1/2 tsp seasoned salt
Salt and Pepper
1/4 cup chopped parsley
1/2 cup diced green bell pepper
2 cups tomato sauce
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 1/2 tsp sugar or Splenda
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup diced onion
2 cups canned diced tomatoes

Heat oven to 350°. Combine tomatoes, tomato sauce, 1 cup water, onion, bell pepper, garlic, parsley, Italian seasoning, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp pepper, garlic powder, seasoned salt, sugar and bay leaves in a stockpot. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and let simmer covered 1 hour. Crumble ground beef into a skillet. Cook until no pink color remains. Drain fat from meat, then add ground beef to stockpot and simmer 20 more min.
-Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta cook according to package directions. Cover bottom of a baking dish with one third of the sauce. Add half of the pasta, then one third of each cheese. Repeat layers ending with sauce. Bake 30 min. Top casserole with remaining cheese and continue to bake until cheese is melted and bubbly, 5 more min. then SERVE...

LIGHT BAKED SPAGHETTI Makes 6 servings.

1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup torn basil leaves
1/2 tsp seasoned salt
2 green bell peppers, diced
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tsp olive oil
Salt
1/2 cup shredded part skim mozzarella cheese
28 oz can crushed tomatoes
1/4 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 pound button or cremini mushrooms, sliced
1/2 pound sweet Italian chicken sausage, casings removed
1 onion, finely chopped
6 oz whole wheat angel hair pasta

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add pasta, cook according to package directions, drain. Heat oil in a skillet. Add onion cook until soft 5 min. Stir in garlic, cook 2 min. Add sausage cook breaking up the meat until browned, 5 min. Stir in bell peppers, mushrooms, seasoned salt and Italian seasoning cook until vegetables are soft, 4 min. Stir in tomatoes, 3/4 cup water and basil, bring to a boil. Reduce heat simmer until sauce thickens slightly, 15 min.

-Heat oven to 375°. Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray. Add pasta to skillet, toss to combine with sauce. Spoon half of the pasta mixture into casserole dish. Sprinkle with half of each cheese. Spoon remaining pasta mixture on top. Sprinkle with remaining cheese, cover loosely with foil sprayed with cooking spray, do not let foil touch cheese. Bake until cheese is melted and bubbly, 25 min. Let stand 5 min. before SERVING...

Random House Readers Circle sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). Bantam Books has published this book so you can get a copy now.

Willa is 30 and single. Paxton is the same age and still living at home. They both have grandmothers in an assisted-living home. They pass each other in hallway and say "Hi", but that's about it.

Paxton has invited Willa to the grand opening of the Blue Ridge Madam, a house that used to belong to Willa's family. When bad times came upon the family, they lost the home. Willa doesn't want to go.

Both women have a love interest, but aren't sure how to handle it. It gets even more involved when they find out there is a body buried on the property of the Blue Ridge Madam.

Was he murdered or was it an accident? Who was he and what was he to the family that lived there? And why is his ghost still hanging around?

Ms. Allen gives you bits and pieces of the mystery as you read the story, shows how the two young women learn about life, love, and the true meaning of friendship, and the epilogue gives you the untold part of the mystery.

24 Hershey chocolate kisses
1 egg
1 cup peanut butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sugar or Splenda

In a bowl, cream peanut butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla, beat until ingredients are blended. Roll into 1 1/4" balls. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 12 min. or until tops are slightly cracked. Immediately press one chocolate kiss into the center of each cookie. Cool 5 min. before removing from pans to wire racks, then SERVE...

Sourcebooks Casablanca and Net Galley gave me an ebook of this story to read for review (thank you). It was published January 1st, so you can get yourself a copy now.

Marly and Joe are two of a type; the love 'em and leave 'em type. So when you put the two of them in the kitchen together, it doesn't take long for things to heat up. I really enjoyed these characters. They're both very strong personalities and are confident in their skills both in the kitchen and in bed, but neither one of them is interested in commitment. It's hard, though, when you start to realize that living without the other one isn't what you want to do...

While they go through the emotional turmoil of trying to decide how they really feel about each and what they want to do about it, someone starts sabotaging the restaurant! A grease fire here, salt instead of sugar there, stoves unplugged and more incidents make them realize this not a mistake. It's a deliberate act to drive them out of business.

Olivia grandmother is a hoot. She manages to save the restaurant and a few lives in about five minutes. Everybody needs one like her in their lives!

It's an enjoyable light read that will make you smile and keep you wondering over just who it is that is causing all these problems.

Get yourself a copy and have a good romantic read. It's a fun story with unique characters.

Slow Cooker Beef Soft Tacos

8 flour tortillas, warmed
1 avocado, diced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded, thinly sliced
1/2 pineapple, peeled, cored, cut into pieces
1 tbs chili powder
1 large onion
1/2 cup cilantro or parsley
2 tbs lime juice
Salt and Pepper
1 1/2 pounds flank steak, cut crosswise into 4 pieces

CHOP 3/4 of the onion, refrigerate the rest. In a slow cooker, toss chopped onion, beef, chili powder, half the pineapple, and 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper. Cook covered until meat is tender and shreds easily, 8 hours on low or 5 hours on high.

WHEN beef has 25 min. left to cook, thinly slice remaining onion. In a bowl, toss onion, jalapeno, lime juice, remaining pineapple, and 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper. Fold in avocado and cilantro. Shred meat, then stir it into cooking liquid. Fill tortillas with beef mixture, top with pineapple salsa, then SERVE...

This story reminded me of Janet Evanovich's series with Stephanie Plum. I think Maggie and Steph would like each other.

Maggie is a very interesting character. She works for an insurance claims office answering calls and questions. She's mild, has no boyfriend, and isn't aggressive. Her new responsibilities are overwhelming. Critical care is not cheap and her Godchild is in a coma and needs the best of care.

When she accidentally bumps into a man in the hospital corridor after the funerals and he's totally rude, she's about as stressed out as she can be. She decides to tell him off and follows him into the room to find him trying to smother a child to death. She picks up a chair and bats him in the head and manages to get away when he tries to get even. After security hauls him away, she meets his father-in-law.

When the father-in-law offers enough money to care to for her little one in an excellent facility just for killing that bastard that tried to kill his own son, she first thinks no. Then she thinks yes. She feels she has no choice.

Throw three witches (some people put a "b" at the beginning of that word), two cops, a handicap seer, and a talking lizard in and you have the mix of characters that Ms. Lynn created for this story.

I found myself laughing though out the story. This tale is a hoot. I'm also sure that there will be more of Maggie May in future books. Her story is just getting started.

I really enjoyed this tale. Imagine a tiny Lizard named Godzilla who asks you to call him God for short. This book has one...

Molly can remember nothing of her past. She finds it very frustrating. Her best friend is a nurse from the hospital, and Karen thinks the fact that she has not recovered from her head injury may be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and not just related to the head injury. She feels that Molly's mind is blocking a bad memory from the past. Molly senses that and is concerned about what she might not want to remember...

Ms. James words flow across the page and catch your interest before you're past the first two pages. Having no memory of your life before frightens me. Especially when Molly finally finds the town in Oregon that used to be her home and finds out that she and her parents just disappeared one day. No one knew where they had gone.

Why would they have done that? Why didn't they tell her anything about the past? Why did they lie to her about what they did say? And why does the local cop feel so much like an old friend?

The author does a very good job of showing Molly's hesitation and Trent's (the cop) worry about how much to share how soon.

This is a good read. It has an usual plot with a nice romantic interest. It's a nice light read that will work well for entertainment while you sit in front of your fire and have a hot chocolate. Just don't choke on your chocolate as the story gets exciting.

He traumatized her badly enough she thought she had injuries. It was the other kidnapped girls he had tortured in front of her that actually had those injuries. She could never feel safe again.

And then the worst possible thing happened. He started killing again and he called her...

This is a fast paced story that will grip your interest and keep you turning pages to see who wins this battle. Lizzy beat him once, he's determined not to let that happen again. She's equally determined to not let him have her again. But when he steals her niece, what can she do?

I read it so fast, I could read it again and pick up more details. I bet it catches your attention just like it did mine. Buy it, you'll like it.

SPANISH SKILLET CHICKEN

SPANISH SKILLET CHICKEN Makes 5 servings.

1 cup frozen peas
14.5 oz can diced tomatoes
1 tbs minced garlic
1/4 tsp black pepper
5 each chicken thighs and drumsticks, skin removed from thighs
1 3/4 cups water
8 oz box yellow rice mix
2 onions, chopped
1 tsp paprika

Sprinkle chicken with paprika and pepper. Cook chicken in a skillet 5 min. per side or until browned. Remove chicken to plate. Remove all but 1 tbs drippings from skillet. Add onions and garlic, saute 4 min. or until golden.
---Stir in rice mix, tomatoes and water. Place chicken pieces on rice. Bring liquid to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 15 min. Stir in peas, cover and simmer 3 min. or until rice is tender, then SERVE...

This is a horror story. If a great disaster hits the world, trying to survive afterwards is a horror. And this story shows one way it might turn out...

Baz and his father are all that is left of his family. His mom and sister went off to visit relatives and were not able to return. His father can gamble and get them some food and goods, but life is hard scrabble and thieves will take anything they can find.

Their one hope for a better life for Baz is to be chosen to go to X Isle. There was rumor of a factory there where they could work and receive some schooling and earn their meals. However, all those rumors were only rumors.

The island is like a prison with madman running the business. Preacher John believes sacrifices will make the waters recede and clean up. All those around him fear him, including his sons.

When you are on the island, you have to do what you are told. The guards are sadistic, food is scarce and work is hard. And if you don't work, you die.

This story was a little too realistic for me. It gave me chills. When things get bad, evil rises in men. Mr. Augarde did a very job of showing how hopeless life is for the boys and how badly they are abused. He also sticks to a realistic ending. No heroes riding in to the rescue. The boys must make their own destiny.

This was a very good read. Any young one with an interest in survival stories or a dystopian fantasy will enjoy this story. Get a copy and see for yourself!

Missy Nelson wanted to get away from the big city and the man who harassed her there, so she came to the ranch she had inherited from her brother. She wasn't a rancher, hadn't ridden a horse, and wasn't used to hard work. But she was willing to do all those things to keep the ranch.

Brent Williams didn't even know Ben had a sister. He had started the business with him and wasn't about to let her take the ranch away from him. He wasn't thrilled about having her for a partner either. But he didn't have much choice...

Both these characters have some baggage and try to walk softly around each other, but the attraction between them is overwhelming and the sex is good, so???

This is a good story with two characters that are hesitant at love. It's fun to watch their dance.

CREAMY PASTA BAKE

Makes 8 servings.

A casserole containing pasta, spinach, kale, sauce and 2 cheeses.

2 oz grated Romano cheese
2 cups chopped kale
12 oz dry ziti pasta, cooked
2 1/2 cups reduced fat milk
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 tbs butter
3 oz shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
4 cups chopped spinach
1/2 cup half and half
1/2 tsp salt
3 tbs flour

Heat oven to 350°. Melt butter in a saucepan, whisk in garlic powder, flour and salt and cook 2 min. Add milk and cream, whisk and cook until creamy and thick, 5 min. Combine pasta, spinach, kale, sauce and cheeses and toss. Place in a casserole dish, cover and bake 30 min. then SERVE...Goes great with ham, if desired.

SLOW COOKER CHICKEN

SLOW COOKER CHICKEN Makes 4 servings.

Chicken thighs and bell peppers topped with a mango sauce and served with rice and peanuts.

1 tsp grated lime peel
2 tbs cornstarch dissolved in 2 tbs water
1 1/2 tsp curry powder
2 tbs lime juice
1 red bell pepper, quartered, sliced
Chopped peanuts
Rice or couscous
1 mango, peeled, sliced
1/4 tsp each salt and pepper
2 tsp minced garlic
9 oz jar mango chutney
8 chicken thighs, skin removed

Place chicken and peppers in a slow cooker. Mix lime juice, chutney, garlic, curry powder, salt and pepper in a bowl, pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low 6 hours or until chicken is cooked through. Remove chicken and peppers to serving platter, stir in cornstarch mixture and mango. Increase heat, cook covered 15 min. or until slightly thickened. Stir in lime peel. Spoon sauce over chicken, SERVE with rice and peanuts...

Military service is a little bit like living in hell, whether you are in a war zone or home...

The author asked her publisher, Navigator Books, to share an ebook copy with me for review (thank you). The book is available for purchase now. This book won the Military Writer's Society of America 2009 Silver Medal for Historical Fiction.

I try not to read novels about the military and war. I have lost friends in wars and try to distance myself from the subject. However, this book is authentic and has a viable message. Ghosts from the past are never forgotten; they still come to visit you once in a while.

Ms. Rodgers does a very nice job of showing how the entire family, including the wife and children, are impacted by military life. She also pulls no punches about the military commanders having character flaws and the power to change any enlisted members life either for the better or for the worst. Men are never better than they should be, some are worse. And if you are not the top officer, you don't argue, you just follow orders.

The author takes you through a rough spot in Turk's life and shares what just what it's like to be an honorable man caught up in a superior's screw up. There is language in this story. It's part of the story and doesn't seem out of place.

If you'd like a closer look at what life is like on bases and in the field, here's a good place to start. While story is fiction, it has the ring of truth.

INGREDIENTS

1 (3 pound) whole chicken

1 1/2 cups chopped onion

1 cup chopped green bell pepper (optional)

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

3 (16 ounce) cans crushed or stewed or diced tomatoes

1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce

1/4 cup sugar

3 tablespoons white vinegar

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 cup water

1 pound red potatoes, peeled and cubed

1 (16 ounce) can baked beans

1 tablespoon hot sauce

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric

1/2 teaspoon pepper

1 (16 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained

1 (16 ounce) can lima beans, drained

DIRECTIONS

COOK chicken in a large Dutch oven in boiling water to cover 45 minutes or until
done.

REMOVE chicken from broth, reserving broth for another use. Cool chicken. Skin,
bone, and chop chicken.

SAUTE onion and bell pepper in hot oil in Dutch oven until tender. Add chicken,
tomato, and next 4 ingredients.

COMBINE flour and 1 cup water, whisking until smooth. Stir into chicken mixture.
Add potato and next 5 ingredients.

COVER and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 20 to 30 minutes. Add
corn and lima beans, and cook 10 minutes.

BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAPS

BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAPS Makes 4 servings.

Flour tortillas filled with a dressing, spinach, celery, carrot, zucchini and chicken strips then rolled up like a burrito.

1 zucchini, cut in narrow strips
2 cups baby spinach leaves
Four 9" spinach and basil flavored wraps or burrito size flour tortillas
Hot sauce to sprinkle
Extra dressing for dipping
2 each trimmed ribs celery and carrots, cut in narrow strips
1/4 cup fat free ranch dressing
9.5 oz pkg fully cooked breaded Buffalo style chicken breast strips

Heat oven to 400°. You will need a rimmed baking sheet. Bake chicken as package directs. Spread each tortilla with 1 tbs dressing, then place 1/2 cup spinach leaves and some celery, carrot and zucchini sticks down center. Top each with 1/4 the chicken strips. Scatter remaining vegetables on top and around chicken. Roll up tightly, cut diagonally in half. SERVE with extra dressing and hot sauce, if desired...

And I am not fond of ebooks. I prefer print books. But I wanted this one enough to sacrifice my preference and get a copy however I could...

Jaines Cord alters the bounty hunter's gun and makes him some new bullets to use. She had no idea the first person he would kill with it would be her husband.

This world has no place for a single woman. It doesn't even treat the married ones well. Jaines manages to avoid the dangers, fight them off when she needs to, and she goes looking for answers about why her husband died. She intends to kill his killer, even if it's almost impossible to do.

Along the way she meets a man with an obisidian hand, who is willing to help her even if he is a rogue Arcane. The bounty hunter will be after him, too, so he has his own self-interest to protect.

The story is almost steampunky: monster horses, magical bullets and guns, a biological source for the night lights, and more are introduced in this story. It has a taste of the old west. And it takes no time at all for you to want to help Jaines along with her journey. She just doesn't know how painful it will become before the end.

I'm buying myself a copy of this for my personal library. Are you sure you don't want to? It's a very good read.

Who doesn't remember Ebenezer Scrooge? He may be a fictional character, but Charles Dickens' story, A Christmas Carol, is still read at Christmas time even now.

Shadow Mountain Publishing and Net Galley let me read the read the ebook for review (thank you). The book was published October 1st, so you can find a copy at your local bookstore now.

Jacob Thelonius Marley's story is written in a Dicken-like style and that takes you back to the days of Scrooge. I really liked this story. It's still full of pain and suffering. Money lenders or collectors are not typically nice people. And Marley liked making money, he cared not about the people whose lives he was destroying.

The author takes you through Marley's life and shows how he became what he was. He also shows you how he influenced Scrooge's life. The three ghosts of Christmas have messages for Marley, too.

To me, this rounded out the story begun in A Christmas Carol. While the story was complete, it just didn't seem to offer enough. This additional story makes it make more sense.

Harry Hole is not "whole". And I'm not talking about his missing index finger. Somehow he has lost part of his soul, too.

Alfred A Knopf sent me a copy of this book in ebook form for review (thank you). I had previously read "The Snowman" and was looking forward to reading this new mystery. I didn't think Mr. Nesbo could scare me so badly again, but he did.

The story begins with a young woman being held captive in a room she doesn't recognize. She has something big in her mouth and she's having trouble breathing. But her captor doesn't appear to be coming back. When he left, he told her not to pull the string. But her mouth hurts, she can't breath, and she's desperate...

When a second woman is found dead from the same unique killing device, a decision is made to go find Harry Hole and bring him home. Harry is hanging out in Hong Kong and using opium to forget the past, he has no desire to go back. When the policewoman cannot get him to change his mind, she plays her hole card: His father is ill and dying. So Harry goes back to Oslo against his better instincts.

This author creates evil mysteries that go far beyond the current event. The past and the future are intertwined in his stories. And the murders are never simple. They're ugly, the journey to solve the murder is full of traps and lies, and Harry comes close to losing his life.

This was a creepy story that kept me glued to it. I hated to set it down. And when it was over, I sat there and thought about it. I don't think this story is really over yet; there's one more character out there I think Mr. Nesbo may insert him in another story. He's like that; you know, sneaky.

This author's stories are complex, absorbing and make an impression upon you. I look forward to reading the next one in this series, even though I do feel sorry for Harry.

Lara can't lie and she can tell if you are telling her the truth or not. She's a truthseeker, and the Seelies have been trying to find one for over hundred years. Now that they have found her, she has to find herself. She has powers that she never knew existed and the staff she's brought from their world to hers tests her, trying to take control of her magic.

This is a complex tale with gods, Seelies and Unseelies, and magic involved. The origin of the tale goes back so far no one remembers what happened. As Lara seeks the cause of the upset in the Seelie's world, she develops enemies. Even her friends are partly her enemies. Watching her walk the tight rope to resolution and hope keeps you on your toes. She's challenged at every step of the way.

This is a busy, magical world with fantasy characters that are larger than life. It was an enjoyable read and the author mends all the loose ends before the story stops.

Why not get the books and see if you can try to guess just how it's going to be resolved. I bet you can't figure it out ahead of time.

DOUBLE PECAN CHOCOLATE PIE

DOUBLE PECAN CHOCOLATE PIE Makes 10 servings.

3/4 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup light brown sugar
4 eggs
1/2 tsp salt
2 tbs sugar
3/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup light corn syrup
6 tbs unsalted butter, cut into small pieces + 4 tbs melted
3 cups pecans
1 1/4 cups flour

IN A FOOD PROCESSOR, pulse sugar, flour, 1/2 cup pecans and 1/4 tsp salt until pecans are finely chopped. Add 6 tbs butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add 2 tbs cold water, pulsing until dough is crumbly but holds together when squeezed. Do not over mix. Transfer dough to a piece of plastic wrap and shape into a 1" thick disk. Wrap tightly and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour.
HEAT oven to 350°. On floured piece of parchment, roll disk of dough into a 12" circle. Slide onto a baking sheet and refrigerate until slightly firm, 10 min. Fit it into the bottom and up sides of a 9" pie plate. Trim dough so the overhang is even all the way around. Fold overhang under itself to create a thicker rim of dough and crimp as desired. Refrigerate until ready to fill.
IN A BOWL, whisk together corn syrup, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, 4 tbs melted butter and remaining salt. Stir in chocolate chips and remaining pecans. Spoon mixture into crust. Bake 30 min. Cover pie with foil and bake until filling if puffed and center is set, 20 min. more. Transfer pie to a wire rack and let it cool to room temp, then SERVE...

Keye is a recovering alcoholic who has lost her job and her husband. She has just completed the first part of her recovery, and she does a bit of private investigating and warrant serving now. Just enough to keep her rent paid and buy a few things, like food.

Bantam, an imprint of Random House, and Net Galley provided me with an ebook for review (thank you). This book was published in August, so you can find a copy at your local bookstore.

Keye is the type of person that starts something and won't stop until she gets to the answer. That almost gets her killed in this story.

There's a serial killer out there who is going after men and women both. The killer has an ugly ritual and the deaths are brutal. Keye's cop friend gets her involved in the case by asking her to profile the killer. She's an unofficial consultant, since she was fired from the FBI. The more she learns about the cases, the more she wants to know...

There is an odd mix of characters in this story. Keye is Asian, her brother is black, her adoptive parents are white. The people around her are not what they seem. Ms. Williams soon has you wondering if any of them are safe to be with.

The story had an unexpected ending for me. I liked it. This is a good read and will keep you glued to your chair. It will also make you wonder if all your friends are what they appear to be. I'll also be watching for another in this series. I don't think Keye is done yet...

He's sixty years old, unemployed, and living with his parents. Anything would be better than that, right?

Mr. Moats shared a free copy of this ebook with me (thank you). He pointed out it was his first book and, as such, might not be of the same quality of writing as his later books. I was perfectly happy with this one, so I'm sure I'd enjoy reading the others he's written also.

I'm the same age and probably in the same shape as Jim Richards, but at least I have my own home and my own business. He soon finds himself a new line of work, but not without some pain...

He's amazed to see a phone call from one of his classmates from 40 years ago. He hasn't talked to her since school, and he was a bit in love with her then. He calls to see why she thinks someone is trying to kill her and he ends up talking to a cop. Someone was successful in their murder attempt...

This story is a bit off the wall, and that's what makes it such fun to read. He decides he's going to investigate the murder. Especially after another classmate gets murdered. Who's killing them and why? Good thing he has a big biker buddy for a friend because he gets in lots of trouble along the way.

The story is plausible, fun to read, and the murderer is not obvious.

If you like a fun mystery story that moves fast, this is a good one for you to read. The best part? It's free now on Smashwords. Go get a copy!

Working on a crowded factory floor sewing was bad enough with no air and no space, but it got much worse when a fire broke out and the door to the hall was locked...

Alfred A Knopf Books for Young Readers provided me with a copy of this book for review (thank you).

It is the 100th anniversary of this event, and it's a good time to look back and re-live the tragedy and the sorrow of the loss of such good women and children who were only trying to live a better life. It's the nature of mankind that makes rich men pay minimal wages to women, children, and minority workers. They want to keep their wealth. They also don't care if some of them die, because there is always someone coming in to take their place. That's a very sad trait of humankind.

This factory was a perfect example of how the moneyed folk abused those without. It was several stories high, folks were mashed up against each other so there was no wasted space, there no windows to speak of, and the doors were locked to make sure they weren't taking forbidden breaks from work. Just one small spark turned into a tragedy the like of which had not been seen before. I'd like to say it hasn't been seen since, but humans just don't seem to learn much from history.

Men died in factory fires, too, but this particular fire took one hundred and forty-six lives. The only tragedy to exceed this count was the event on September 11, 2001.

This well written account has a lot of photos to help young ones visualize life in 1911. You learn about where the immigrants began their lives and what they had hoped for in the US.

It's a disturbing story, but it's our history and we need to learn from the past. Get a copy and share it with your child. I'd suggest that you discuss this tragedy with your child and let them know there are safety requirements in place now that make work places safer. Let them know how far we've come and how much farther we have to go...

The year is 1919, and the story is set in Denver. The lady of the house is disabled and needs a companion. "Geraldine" decides to take a chance and apply for the position. She has no references, but she was a lady in the past and has good bearing and manners.

Ms. Stubbs hires her on a whim, which turns out to be a quirk of fate. She wants someone who won't back down from her and can give as good as she takes sarcasm and criticism. However she mustn't go over line between employee and employer.

Geraldine (who has hidden her identity) soon finds that there are problems within the household. Someone attempts to kill Ms. Stubbs and only her previous training helps her save the woman.

When a maid gets murdered, she realizes she will have to solve the case before she becomes a suspect.

The author gives us plenty of people after Geraldine and Ms. Stubbs, the suspects are all capable of murder, and the action is full of drama and danger.

This story has the flavor of an old Victorian tale. I really enjoyed it. If you enjoy old-fashioned mysteries, this tale is for you.

This is a touch of "Pygmalion" in this book.

Melba has been raised as a boy, taught to thieve with the best of them, and doesn't want to admit she's a girl. When Turk demands Mel bathe and get into some clean clothes, she fights hard to bathe alone. When she and the housekeeper get into a fight, Turk comes in to break it up and finds she's a female. More importantly, he finds she has six toes on each foot. That means she's the missing princess...

When he visits the head monk and shares this info with him, he's instructed to "train" the girl as a princess would act and then turn her over to her father. Not an easy task...

Ms. Taylor makes her characters brave, charming, and interesting. I loved the terms Mel used when she first came in off the street. As they work together to improve her skills, she gradually falls in love with Turk, and he with her.

He's a monk, she's a Princess, and royalty doesn't marry commoners. But I found myself hoping it would work out.

The story is fast-paced and a very good read. I'm sure there will be a sequel because this story isn't done yet. I'll be waiting for it to come out.

This is one of the best fairy tales I've read this year. Why not grab yourself a copy and see what you think?

Random House sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). This is part of the "Haunted Mystery" series and is the first book I've read by this author. The book is currently available at your local bookstore.

This tale starts when Zack makes the mistake of following his dog into the graveyard. Unbeknownst to him, there's been a family feud going on for years and the demons in the crypt want to kill him...

Halloween is coming and that's the time of year when powerful spirits can walk the earth again. Zack's Dad decides it's time to get his aunts to visit. They are witches and have powers to fend off the demons. They are also the reason the ghosts from the past are incarcerated in the crypt.

This story has lots of action, the demons are mean, and horror rides the night at Halloween. This one will hold the young one's attention and will give them all kinds of ideas on how they would have ended it. Why not have them write an alternative ending?

Kate ran from home at 17, leaving behind her drunken father and a boy she loved, searching for a new beginning. She found that and was doing well, but her last boyfriend apparently was gay and now he was spreading rumors that she was the "gay" person. Her best bet right now is to lie low.

Then she finds out the big "dirt" reporter is going to go talk to her father about her. She knows no good can come from that. So she decides she might as well go home to Secret, Montana, and lick her wounds. She can do a show there, stop her father from talking to the reporter, and she might even see Nick again...

This is well paced romance/mystery story. It reads well, you get drawn into empathy with the characters, and Ms. Evans even surprised me with the identity of the killer. This was a fun mystery to read. Why not buy a copy for yourself?

This is a cute story with old-fashioned illustrations. They remind me of the rag doll days. They also make the story even more charming.

Fred tries to roar and spit fire, but nothing happens and his victims laugh at him. So he eats them. But that doesn't work out well; he gets a tummy ache! It takes a witch, a giant, and a tiny man to help Fred get over his stomach ache.

The best part of the story is how Mr. Hayes ends it. It will make everyone in your family smile!

Susan really wants a new apartment, but apartment space is very dear and very expensive in New York. When she finds a really cheap apartment, she commandeers her husband and heads out to look it over before it's gone. It's her dream apartment: space, room for her art, a nice sized kitchen and more. She loves it!

The landlord is a bit weird, but she's a widow living on her own for a while so that might be normal. The handyman makes some comments about things that sound like there may have been trouble in the past, but Susan doesn't want to hear that.

Then she finds a bite on her wrist. She's sure it's bedbugs because there has been a bedbug outbreak in NY. But she's the only one getting bit...

Soon she becomes obsessed with it. The further you read, the less sure you are about her sanity. But the awful truth is even worse than her losing her mind...

This is edge-of-your-chair fright, folks. I could feel bugs crawling on me as I read. If you like books that make you feel a bit uncomfortable, this book will do it. Why not grab a copy and let me know what you think of it? It's a perfect Halloween read.

Cookie Dough Truffles

Cookie Dough Truffles

1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
1 tablespoon water
6 ounces mini semisweet chocolate chips

Cream butter and sugar. Add remaining ingredients. Mix well. Form dough into
small walnut-sized balls. Refrigerate.

Variations: Melt 12 ounces semisweet chocolate. Dip truffles in chocolate.
Place on foil-lined cookie sheet until set.

Or cream 3/4 cup peanut butter, 3/4 cup butter and brown sugar. Continue
with recipe as written.

Instead of making truffles, press dough into an 8-inch square pan sprayed
with nonstick spray. Top with ganache made by warming 1/4 cup cream and 2
tablespoons butter in a pan until it just simmers, then adding 2/3 cup
chocolate chips and stirring until melted. Pour over dough in pan.
Refrigerate until set. Cut into small squares

This is a chilling story. It's a different sort of horror story; one you can almost believe might happen and you hope it will never come true.

Once you turn eighteen, you are required to become part of the killers. The assignments are secret, you have no friends and it's safer to have no family since the other side has its own set of killers who are after you, too.

You only know they have killed your relatives and you want to even the score. You don't care why it started and you suspect it will only end with your death. But you have no choice, you must do your part. And if you break a rule, you become a target on both sides...

The premise is interesting. This is the first book in the series and I'm anxious to see where the author goes from here. The ending of this book is heartbreaking.

The End of the Wasp Season by Denise Mina

Lars was a controller; everything had to be done his way. So why would he hang himself from a tree in the front yard his children weren't allowed to walk on?

This is story written in the present, but tied to the past. There are layers of love and hate, lies and truth, and psychological damage. Lars committed suicide, but the "why" is complex.

Detective Inspector Alex Morrow is assigned to a random murder, where a young woman's face is destroyed. She's five months pregnant with twins, so it makes it more of a challenge. Her mind is good, though.

If those two cases weren't enough to keep the cops busy, their hatred for their new commander has everyone riled up. Morrow tries to keep the peace, but loses the battle.

The final, and most interesting for me, part of this story is what happens to the Anderson family after Lars is no longer there to run it. His selfishness and desire for everything to be perfect has left a family of "lost people". They don't know how to function in the world and they are mentally scarred.

This is a messy pot of evil that is very realistic, gritty and ugly. But it's a slice of life that more than one cop has seen. And it'll stay on your mind for a while after you set the book down, too.

Delacorte Books for Young Readers gave me an ebook to review (thank you). The book will be published November 8th. This is the second book in the series, but I had no trouble reading it without reading the first one.

This is tale of wizards, witches, magic, and evil of more than one kind. Morag finds herself fighting the evil with the help of her friends, but she doesn't have the magic the others do.

Here's a rousing tale with danger, excitement, odd creatures, and two fantasy kingdoms involved. As you trip along the trail and across the sea with Morag, you can see that there will be another book in this series. That's a good thing because not all the secrets have been revealed thus far.

I'd suggest middle graders will enjoy this series most. It has enough silly stuff to keep them interested and I know they'll want to read the whole series. Why not get them book one now and then pick this one up when it comes out? If they like fantasy and magic, this is a good series for them.

This author writes authentic westerns that are hard and gritty. His characters aren't perfect, bad things happen to good people, and it's a tough life in Texas.

Josiah is a Ranger, but the public in Austin thinks he murdered Feders to get Pearl, a woman they both were interested in. That wasn't the case, but it's not safe for him in town anymore. He gets assigned to go undercover and live in Corpus Christie and see if he can find out who is working with the Mexicans that like to raid the ranchers in that locale.

Josiah never seems find a straight line to follow. One thing leads to another, his cover is blown, and he's on the move back to Austin because he's heard that his young son is seriously ill.

The story moves along well and Josiah makes up his mind about some important issues on the way. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next book in the series. I think Josiah is probably going to have to face more challenges. Mr. Sweazy has given him a rough life so far.

Why not purchase a copy of this book and take a ride with real cowboys? There are others in the series if you'd like to start at the beginning. They are well worth the read.

GARLICKY SPINACH LASAGNA

GARLICKY SPINACH LASAGNA Makes 6 servings.

2 tbs olive or vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups coarse breadcrumbs
4 tbs prepared pesto
6 oz goat cheese
2 cups creamy white sauce
8 oz wide egg noodles
Salt and Pepper
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
4 tbs butter
1 1/2 pounds baby spinach

In a saucepan, bring 2" water to a simmer. Add spinach until wilted, cook until all of it is tender. Drain and let cool. Squeeze out excess moisture and chop. In a skillet, melt 2 tbs butter. Add garlic and stir until golden. Stir in spinach. Season with salt and pepper, remove from heat.
STEP 2---Heat oven to 400°. In a saucepan of boiling salted water, cook noodles until al dente. Drain but do not rinse and return to saucepan. Stir in white sauce. Grease an 8" square glass baking dish. Layer in half of the noodles. Dot with half of the goat cheese, spread spinach on top. Stir 3 tbs pesto into remaining noodles and spoon over spinach.
STEP 3---Dot with remaining cheese. Cover with foil and bake until hot and bubbling, 35 min. Let stand 10 min. In a skillet, melt remaining butter. Add breadcrumbs and cook until golden and crisp. Season with salt and pepper. Combine remaining pesto with oil. Drizzle lasagna with pesto oil and sprinkle with crumbs, then SERVE...CREAMY WHITE SAUCE---Melt 2 tbs butter in a saucepan. Add 1/2 cup finely chopped shallots and cook until tender. Stir in 1/4 cup flour for 2 min. Whisk in 2 cups warm milk, bring to a boil and cook 2 min. Remove from heat and stir in 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese and 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper.

Schwartz & Wade sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). This is a prequel to Toys Go Out and Toy Dance Party. It was published in September, so you can get a copy at your local bookstore now. Subtitle on the book is: Being the Early Experiences of an Intelligent Stingray, a Brave Buffalo, and a Brad-New Someone Called Plastic.

This is a delightful story of toys that come alive and talk amongst themselves. They vie for the best views, sleepy time with their girl, and the chance to go on trips with her. They also take care of each other.

Such a cute tale will fascinate the little ones and make them wonder if their stuffed animals talk while they are out of the room or asleep. This would also make a good "read aloud" book. Why not get a copy and read it to them before bed each night until you've completed the story. They'll love it!

COCA COLA CAKE Makes 24 servings.

CAKE:
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups sugar or Splenda
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup cocoa powder
1 cup Coca Cola, not diet
3/4 cup mini marshmallows
3 extra large eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
2 1/3 cups all purpose flour
2 oz unsweetened chocolate, chopped
1 cup unsalted butter or margarine
ICING:
1 1/4 pound powdered sugar, sifted
1 cup cocoa powder, sifted
1/2 cup Coca Cola, not diet
4 oz unsweetened chocolate, melted
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 cups butter or margarine

Heat oven to 325°. TO PREPARE CAKE---Melt butter in saucepan. Add marshmallows, stir until melted. Add chocolate, stir until melted. Add Coca Cola, then set aside to cool 10 min. Sift flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Place sugar, oil and vanilla in a bowl. Beat. Add eggs, beat well. Add chocolate mixture and beat until combined. Add half the flour mixture, then buttermilk, then remaining flour mixture, beat well. Scrape into two 8" cake pans. Bake 45 min. or until done. When cool, cut each cake layer in half horizontally, to make 4 layers. TO PREPARE ICING---Cream butter in bowl until smooth. Add Coca Cola and vanilla. Mix until blended. Add cocoa and chocolate. Mix until smooth. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth. Frost cake and SERVE...

If this book intrigues you, you should look at the previous book in the series: The Very Little Princess: Zoey's Story. This one reads fine alone, but the very little princess had another adventure before this one you might like to read also.

She's three and one quarter inches tall and is well aware she is a princess. And you stupid humans better be ready to treat her as one, too!

Rose is a bit of a clumsy child, but she's entranced when she finds this beautiful little china doll. Her mother thinks she too young for her, but Rose insist she'll be safe. So Regina moves into Rose's room and it isn't long until Rose finds out she can talk...

Being young and having a unique gift is hard for Rose. She doesn't want to hide her. Regina doesn't think she needs to sleep. How can she go to school and leave her home? How can she take her to school and not let anyone see her?

It's fun to watch Rose trying to protect Regina. The princess is not the least bit thankful. Not even when Rose finds a dollhouse that is just the right size for her.

This a cute story that draws young ones in to the fantasy tale. The princess is really too spoiled, but what do you expect from a miniature doll? It's a scary world out there.

Why not take a walk in the princess's shoes and see how life is at three and one quarter inches?

SOUTHWESTERN LASAGNA TORTA Makes 6 servings.

1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro or parsley
1 cup sour cream
1/3 cup drained sliced pickled jalapeno chiles
1 cup refried beans
1 3/4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
10 oz frozen peas, thawed
8 corn tortillas, cut crosswise in quarters
2 cups salsa
1 packet taco seasoning
1 pound ground pork
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tbs vegetable oil

In a skillet, heat oil. Add onion and cook until golden. Add pork and break it up, cook until no longer pink. Sprinkle in taco seasoning with 1/2 cup water and simmer until saucy. Remove from heat. Heat oven to 400°. Grease a round 9" deep dish pie pan. Add 1/2 cup salsa to the bottom of pan.
STEP 2---Arrange a third of the tortilla pieces on top. Top with half of the meat mixture and half of the peas, then sprinkle with 1/3 cup cheese. Add another layer of tortilla pieces, 1/2 cup salsa and beans, sprinkle with jalapenos and 1/3 cup cheese. Layer with remaining tortilla pieces, meat mixture and peas, sprinkle with 1/3 cup cheese.
STEP 3---Cover pan with foil, set on a baking sheet and bake in oven 25 min. Uncover pan, sprinkle remaining cheese on top and bake until bubbling, 8 min. Tent with foil and let stand 10 min. Uncover and top with sour cream and cilantro, then SERVE...

The Black Banner by Helen Hart

Pirates were the scourge of the seas but they've always totally fascinated me. Why would anyone want to take the chance of dying on the water or in battle just to get some gold? And just what would inspire a young girl to pretend she was male and sign on as a cabin boy?

The author and publisher sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). You can purchase a copy on Amazon right now, it was published in June.

This is a rollicking good tale about a young girl escaping her mother's drunkenness and a future forced marriage to an old man. She manages to get signed on a ship and leaves her old home behind, but she has to work like the devil and toughen up to keep up with her work requirements.

Pirates and ship captains were both unforgiving and mostly mean. This book is written for young adults so while there are enough of the horrors of ship life revealed, "Billy" finds a kind pirate captain and has a better chance at life because of it.

No one is going to get bored while reading this story. There's good interaction between the characters, the action is hot, and the soldiers are after them to stop pirating. This is a good read, get a copy!

I also interviewed the author. I asked:

Why did you pick the ship you did; did it have some particular interest to you or did you research it just for your story? Have you always liked pirate stories? How long did it take you to get to your final edit; was it short process or a long time?

Here are her very interesting answers:

I didn't really pick the ship - it picked me! I did lots of reading and research about ships, and the sort of vessels that would have been sailing in the 17th century. There weren't wide varieties of ships capable of doing the sort of ocean voyages described in 'The Black Banner', so once I'd narrowed my research down to era, size, and capability, it had to be a ship like the 'Bonnie Marie'.

I've always loved pirate stories. They're exciting, and offer a different kind of freedom from that which we're used to nowadays. We live by so many rules in modern society, but out there on the sea, the renegade crew of a pirate ship has stepped outside of society and they make their own rules. As a child I adored stories like 'Treasure Island' and 'A High Wind in Jamaica' so the chance to write a pirate story of my own was one to grab with both hands!

I worked very fast on The Black Banner. I had to! I'd always thought it would take ages to interest an agent, so I sent off the book long before it was finished. Then when my agent loved it, accepted me on the basis of 50 pages, and wanted to send out the manuscript to publishers right away I was in a tricky situation. I had the choice of losing the opportunity, or writing three-quarters of a book in as short a time as possible. I finished 'The Black Banner' in 7 weeks. I still can't believe I did that! I've never worked to fast before or since (thank goodness... I was writing at every spare moment including deep into the night).

I also asked her to tell me a bit about herself:

Helen has been a published author since 1999. Represented by London literary agency Pollinger Ltd, she has written a number of novels under pseudonyms for Scholastic, Oxford University Press, HarperCollins, Virgin Books and a range of overseas publishers. Her work has been translated into many languages including Swedish, Danish, Japanese and Greek. One of her Young Adult novels, written as Maya Snow, was shortlisted for the Solihull Children's Book Award 2010.
Helen is one of the founding partners of publishing consultancy SilverWood Books (silverwoodbooks.com) which helps writers get their work into print. She is the co-founder of the successful 'Get Published Masterclass' in Bristol and was a judge for the Bristol Short Story Prize in 2010 and 2011. Her most recent book is the swashbuckling pirate adventure 'The Black Banner'.
She's a very pleasant lady and writes a good book. I enjoyed chatting with her and recommend this book for young readers and old.

This book could have easily been titled: "Evil." Someone has become a vigilante and he/she is killing people who got away with murder. The bodies are located in the same place the victim was found...

Ballantine, a division of Random House Publishing and Net Galley gave me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It was published on the 19th of September, so you can grab a copy now at your local bookstore.

This is a complex tale of a sick mind. The killer is working up to a finale on Halloween, and the cops are trying to stop him.

The plot goes into the past and works forward into the future. Many of the characters are interconnected. There are clues that make no sense. Any possible witnesses are killed. There is no trail to follow, just some good cops trying to out think a psycho. One of those cops has black outs and is in poor mental health, but he's doing his best to solve the case.

Mr. Montanari's story was 1,119 pages. I read the entire book in two nights. It's mesmerizing. You don't want to set it down. It's action packed, with little hints here and there that made no sense until the end. I was totally surprised by the identity of the killer. I saw no connection at all as I read the story; the killer didn't come to the surface until the end of the book. This author had me glued in my chair.

I highly recommend this book. It's an very good read!

Albert Whitman and Co. and Net Galley gave me an ebook to read for review (thank you). This book was published the first of September and would be available at your local bookstore now. It is written for young adults but it's a good adult read also.

It's the 1850's in London, and servants are indentured and often treated like slaves. It's no different in this household. The servants band together and try to protect each other, but the master and mistress must be obeyed unilaterally.

Abi is young but smart. By observing secrets in the household, she suddenly realizes that her mother did not die of the plague; it was murder! Who would do such an awful thing?

This author does a nice job of drawing a picture of the dark ugly times of London that you experience as a servant. It almost seems there is no way out for Abi. Mr. Ford creates an interesting tale full of characters who are weak, overbearing, sad, selfish, and greedy. Kindness doesn't appear to grow in this house.

This is a twisted tale that will chill your bones. Just be glad you don't live there...

The Lantern by Deborah Lawrenson

Eve finds herself falling dramatically in love with an older man who has secrets in his past. When he takes her to Les Genévriers, a charming hamlet amid the fragrant lavender fields of Provence, she finds out that his house has secrets, too.

Harper sent me an ARC of this book for review (thank you). It came out in first half of August, so you can find a copy at your local bookstore now.
I found this an intriguing and fascinating story. It's the story of a young woman deeply in love with Dom. When she makes friends with another lady in the village, she begins to find things out about his first wife, and Dom doesn't want to discuss it. Eve is persistent and keeps asking questions; it begins to drive a wedge between them.

While their personal relationship teeters on the edge of destruction, the house itself seems to have grown colder and be less welcoming. Eventually, Eve discovers there's a back story to the home as well.

Ms. Lawrenson binds together an old tragedy and a new one. The story engages your attention as you try to answer the questions before the story does. It's also interesting to watch these two lovers try to overcome their differences and move on with life.

I found it a very good read; both tales catch your attention. The author's characters have faults, like humans do. The ending is satisfactory. This is tale of life, not romance novel. That was part of what I liked.

Makes 6 servings
Chicken and cheese flour tortilla enchiladas topped with tomato and onion.

1 green onion, sliced
6 flour tortillas, warmed
2 cups chopped cooked chicken
1 cup Picante salsa sauce
10 3/4 oz can condensed cream of chicken soup
1 tomato, chopped
1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
2 tsp chili powder
1/2 cup sour cream

Heat oven to 350°. Stir soup, sour cream, picante sauce and chili powder in a bowl. Stir 1 cup soup mixture, chicken and cheese in a bowl. Divide chicken mixture among tortillas. Roll up tortillas and place seam side down in a baking dish. Pour remaining soup mixture over filled tortillas. Cover baking dish. Bake 40 min. or until enchiladas are hot and bubbling. Top with tomato and onion, then SERVE...

This story is set in Denmark. Carl has lost one staff member and the other one is paralyzed. He's finally well enough to go to work, but he gets along with no one.

I always enjoy reading books written by authors in other countries. It tells me something about the area the story is set in and it also shows me how similar and how different Americans are from other nationalities.

Mr. Alder-Olsen writes a mean detective story. He takes his angst-ridden main character and puts him in a control of a new department, Department Q. He's the manager and also the only employee. And he's happy with that. Looking at closed cases and taking naps sounds good. Especially since he ends up stuck in the basement.

This story is wound around old events and new terrors both. The road to a solution is twisted and Carl tries not to be interested in the case, but it annoys him because the investigation was not the best and half the info received was never written down.

The ending is fast paced and traumatic. I had a suspicion about what might have happened, but I never anticipated the stormy ending.

This was a very good read. Why not visit Denmark and do some sleuthing with Carl yourself? There will be more in this series, and I'll be watching for it. It was a very good read.

Sheila has been killed in a car accident. She was parked where she shouldn't be and she was drunk, which was not like her. Glen cannot believe she'd drink too much and drive. She never drank much anyway. All he knows is that he's lost his wife and he doesn't know why.

This is a well written mystery with lot of ugly characters in it. The setting is a small town that is normally calm and well mannered, but there is a lot of evil percolating inside those homes. I had to read the whole book before I had a clue of just how many were involved and how the story tied together.

The author does an excellent job in building reality into her story. Each person has their own separate motivation for their actions. And the central bad people were folks I never even considered as suspects. I love it when a book does that to me.

All the blocks start tumbling down after Sheila's "accident". Why not get a copy and see if you can figure out who the killer is before the end. If you do, let me know. And tell me why you thought so. I bet you don't identify the bad guys until the end either...

Amulet Books and Net Galley let me have an ebook to read for review (thank you). The book was published the first of August, so check with your local bookstore for a copy. This is a fantastic paranormal story for young adults but it sure kept me glued to my chair!

Jael likes the school she's attending now and she's made a few friends, so she doesn't want to pack up and leave again. She knows it's coming, though.

When her sixteenth birthday rolls around, her father gives her a necklace that her mother left to her. He tells her she can't wear it yet. Her body and mind tell her differently. She suddenly discovers that she is half-demon...

I would not have guessed a male author wrote this book. He really does an excellent job of portraying Jael as a young woman who knows she's a bit different, but not why. His words even feel feminine when he's dealing with her conversations. I'm impressed.

This is way out fantasy with good kick-butt action and plenty of danger. The story moves fast, flows well, and draws you into the characters, even those you don't admire so much. I loved this book and I think there may be more coming in the future. Jael hasn't banned all the evil Lords of Hell yet...

I highly recommend this book. It was good fun to read. Why not try out a copy yourself?

How would you like to step forward into the future and find yourself back in the '80s? 1980s that is.

Wunderkind PR sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). I had been hearing a lot of buzz about it, so I was glad to get my own copy. Crown Publishing has already published it, so you should be able to find a copy at your local bookstore now.

Mr. Cline creates an interesting concept for his story. He sets it in the future, 2044, where almost everything is done online. Nobody much goes out into the real world anymore. Most live in a virtual world and play games all day. They go to school in the virtual world, too. Then he creates a man even richer than Bill Gates who creates the ultimate game; the prize is all his money and assets...

This is a geekie book. I had no problem following even though I'm not a gamer, but I may have missed some references. The fun part of the story is the fact that the author works in old video games that aren't popular anymore in this day and age, imagine how weird they must seem in 2044. Mr. Cline's bad guys are a corporation that want the money and will do anything to acquire it, even murder.

The story covers a lot of time (it takes five years for the first key to be found) but the action keeps it moving fast. You root for the little guys, but the corporation has multiple players and plays dirty.

The author's ending is smooth, the strings all tie together, and it was a very satisfying read. If you enjoy mystery and intrigue, this book is for you. Gamers should enjoy it, too. Pick up a copy and see what you think.

I lived in Washington while the Green River Killer was active. This case fascinated me. We even got interviewed on the steps of the Boeing Museum of Flight about the case. And even though the killer has been convicted, the story just doesn't seem to be over yet...

Dark Horse Comics and Net Galley gave me the opportunity to review this book (thank you). It will be published at the end of the month and you can pick up a copy of this graphic novel at your local bookstore.

Jonathan Case is the illustrator of this novel, and his graphics add to the feeling of noir crime, seemingly dark and desperate. Mr. Jensen's story is based on the lead detective's hunt over the years. He has first hand knowledge, since that was his father. Other books I have read have centered on Ridgeway. I found this side of the tale much more entertaining and much more heartrending.

The killer was a soulless man who thought prostitutes were trash. Mr. Jensen spent his whole career trying to find closure for the parents of the victims and to stop the killer from doing it again. The hunt was tedious, almost hopeless, but he never gave up.

This graphic novel makes the story succinct and the art work makes the pain easy to see. If you find yourself fascinated by true crime, you need to get this book and read what the son has said about his dad. It's sad and touching both.

One of the authors sent me a copy of this ebook for review (thank you). You can purchase a copy on Amazon. The best part about it is that the funds raised are going to be donated to the fight against breast cancer. I don't think anyone could say they didn't know someone who has suffered from this illness. This is a painless way to get some real good reading and do good at the same time. Go on, it'll make you feel better. Especially after you start this wonderful paranormal romance collection!

Just remember that the purchase of this book also will help the fight against breast cancer. My Aunt had a mastectomy, so I understand the need to conquer this beast.

Storey likes to draw. So when she finds a fancy new pencil on her way home, she picks it up and takes it home. It draws nicely, too; unfortunately, it's a stylus.

Ms. Mayer sent me an ebook of this story for review (thank you). It written for young adults, but this older reader enjoyed it, too. You can grab a copy on Amazon.

Storey doesn't understand the significance of the "pencil" she's found, but she does know that her drawing has become obsessive. She can't stop. And she can't control what she draws, the pencil does it itself. She can just hold it and it draws. As she begins to worry about this, she meets a new, very attractive, boy at school.

Eric is in our world searching for the stylus. He's supposed to retrieve it and take it home. His father doesn't even care if he has to kill Storey to get it. But Eric does...

This is a paranormal romance story with lots of danger, evil people, and different worlds in different dimensions. The story is well plotted and the action keeps you reading. I was especially impressed with how quickly Storey learned to use the stylus and what she could do with it.

I have only complaint with this book. It ends on a cliffhanger and I want Ms. Mayer to write the next book, NOW!

Random House Kids Books sent me a copy of this to review (thank you). I loved it! It is the sixth in the series, but the first one I've read. You can pick this one up at your local bookstore now. You might want to add a few more to the pile. It made me laugh out loud.

This is a graphic novel with odd looking characters. The illustrations appealed to me. They are dressed to go out on the town trick or treating, and they expect no trouble except getting so much candy they can't carry it home.

Unfortunately, Henri the tortoise inadvertently turns on an atomic light on the way out and the dust bunnies in the house grow into Zombies...

This book is silly and fun and I'm sure children will love it. Why not put some copies of this book in the trick or treat bags the children bring? It'll last a longer than candy.

Walmart is bringing back layaway! There will be a few changes from when they use to offer layaway, but at least you will have that option again. It will roll out October 17, just in time for the holiday season and will only stick around through December 16.You will need to have a minimum purchase of $50 and each item will need to be priced at $15 or more. There will be a $5 layaway fee, you will need to pay 10% down and complete their payment schedule. You will be required to pick up your layaway no later than December 16 or pay a $10 cancellation fee.

Tara Luna is orphaned and being raised by her Uncle Pat. She loves him dearly and he's good to her, but he refuses to listen about her "ghosts". He just doesn't believe in that sort of stuff. Tara doesn't have any choice...

Ms. Sala does a wonderful job of showing how hard it is to keep going to new schools and trying to fit in. It's even harder when you're "different". I experienced that when I went from Catholic parochial school into public high school. Talk about culture shock!

Tara tries to keep her secret, but that doesn't last long. She can't let the little boy in the bathroom die. She attempts to explain how she knew as being psychic. The author shows you her confusion over trying to be less than truthful but still having to act when she senses danger.

I enjoyed this read. It was light, a bit silly at points, and the ghosts are part of the fun. I am glad to see there will be more in this series. The door was left open at the end of this book to continue the search for a murderer, and I'm sure that will be in the next book.

Try this young adult book, it's a good read and an interesting story. If you do, you'll probably be like me and you'll be waiting for the next story, too.

Imagine a world where no one died of natural causes anymore...

Twilight Times Books published this story in June and sent me a copy for review (thank you). Check with your local bookstore for a copy.

I have not read anything by this author before, so I wasn't sure exactly what to expect. The story line intrigued me, though.

Grace Harper is a black-listed PI that is short on work and money so she was happy to get a call from one of the richest men in the world. Of course, she didn't know how much trouble it was going to get her into.

This is a fast paced adventure story. Grace has no idea who she can trust. Her employer will probably kill her when she finds the man he's looking for, the cops are warning her to be careful and no matter where she goes or who she tries to talk to, someone tries to kill her.

Grace has no illusions about her safety but she's trying to complete her job. The more she learns, the less she knows. This is not any easy assignment.

The author does a very good job of creating a world of the future. The problems have not decreased, nor has the evil in the world lessened. It's a hard world, and even if you can live longer, you can still die younger...

If you enjoy dystopian fantasy, this book is one your shouldn't miss. It's an interesting good read, so get a copy and try it yourself.

Wendy Lamb Books sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It has already been published, so you can find a copy at your local bookstore. I've read many of Ms. Giff's books (she's a two-time Newbery honor winner), but this one particularly touched me.

Rachel is a young girl who finds herself uprooted from city life and moved to a farm. The farm is run down, there are holes in the roof and there's not much furniture. But the rent is cheap...

Pop had a job in the bank, which closed down in the Depression. The job he moved for disappeared when he was snowed in and unable to get to the interview. He worked for a grocer for food, but soon the grocer had to close, too. He had no choice but travel further and hope the project he was working on would eventually pay him wages. In the meantime, the three children are left home alone.

As you watch Rachel give up her dreams and settle into being the matriarch of the family, it's very easy to see yourself in her shoes. She refuses to give up, despite her young age.

This an excellent story of children coming of age and a family working together to better themselves. It's also a good lesson on how life was during the days of the Great Depression. Why not share this knowledge with your young adult?

Simon and Schuster shared a galley of this book with me for review (thank you). The book will be published the first week of October so add it to your TBR list. This author is Norwegian and this is first book, but it certainly won't be his last. It's also an excellent read.

Henning Juul is an investigative journalist who does a very good job. In many ways, he does a better job than the police do. It helps that he has an instinct that tells him even if the conclusion is logical, it's not "right".

He's suffered a terrible loss. His flat caught fire and when he and his son attempted to flee the building, only he got out. His son died, along with part of Juul's heart, and he had awful burns from the fire. He also ended up divorced because even though he thought he still loved his wife, he couldn't live with her because of his guilt at not saving their son. As he returns to work, he realizes that's all he's got left in his life.

His first day back he finds himself following the murder case that has just been discovered. A young woman is found inside a tent, buried up to her neck, with her hand cut off and her head almost unrecognizable because she was stoned to death. This is a complex case with multiple players and personalities involved.

Mr. Enger writes a story thick with detail, where clues fall over each other and no one is exactly what they seem. There are bad guys all around and the ones that should be good are not. He leads you through Juul's coming back to life and learning he can still find excitement at the thought of following the trail of the killer; even if he may die because he is doing so. The author also does a psychological study of several of the other characters in the story.

I found his writing fascinating. He weaves his story together without giving you any real hints about how it's going to turn out. I kept turning to pages to see what would happen next.

And, the best part, at the end of the book, Juul is moving past his son's death and asks a friend to see if they can find out who torched his flat. As soon as it comes out, I'll be reading that book, too!

Clarion Books, a division of Houghton, Mifflin, Harcourt, sent me a copy of this book when I won their contest (thank you)! I missed the first in the series, however this book can definitely stand alone. It has already been published so you can find a copy at your local bookstore.

Tamsin seemingly was born without talent in a family of witches. It was a real disappointment to her, but she was learning to live without it. Then she suddenly finds she take other people's talents. She's thrilled. Her grandmother is still concerned about the family's danger from another family of witches who wants their power.

Ms. MacCullough uses time travel to send Tamsin back in time to try to stop the evil plot. To add even more excitement to it, she puts Tamsin in the evil family's house as a servant. Things get much more tense then! Tamsin can either win or lose, and you're not sure which is going to happen.

This is a very well written tale that moves along smoothly and keeps your interest. The ending was a complete surprise to me and done well.

Why not buy both books in this series and read about Tamsin's adventures? They are great fun.

Tricycle Press sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It's another great educational tool for parents and you can find it at your local bookstore now.

This is a hardcover picture book with thicker pages for young readers. The majority of the text can be read by early readers, but they are going to need some help to pronounce the name of the dinosaurs. For example, how old were you before you could pronounce velociraptor?

My favorite part of the book, though, is the young man acting out the shape and type of each dinosaur. Young ones will have great fun pretending they are a dinosaur and chasing each other around.

This book should be useful to any educator or parent who wants to enhance his child's learning. Go visit your local bookstore and check it out. I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

Simon & Schuster sent me an egalley to review (thank you). This book will be available on September 20th. I'd previously read a book in this series and was anxious to see how Mr. Westerfeld chose to end his trilogy. I was not disappointed!

Keith Thompson is the illustrator and his drawings really bring the characters to life. They add to the flavor of the story and help you envision the characters.

Alek and Deryn are pretty much the best of friends, even if they are on opposite sides of the war. However, Deryn has a deep secret she hasn't told Alek that will probably destroy their relationship. She knows their journey together will be over soon enough so she holds on to her secret and hopes to slip away in the crowd when the Leviathan's tour is over.

Alek may be a prince, but he's pretty useless on an air ship. He feels like he's just taking up space. As long as Deryn is around and they can buddy up together, he's happy. He doesn't even mind taking chances with him. Deryn always seems to know what to do in times of danger.

Mr. Westerfeld writes a busy story: lots of action, lots of danger, and lots of plot twists. They are a fast read for me because I have to know what's going to happen next! He tells a "wide" tale. It covers many countries, history, an interesting look at warfare, and he shows an amazing insight into character development.

This is an excellent read with lots of excitement for everyone. Why not get a copy and read it for yourself. And, if you haven't read the others in the series, I'd recommend you buy the complete set. It's a great series and you can then re-read them at your leisure. These books are keepers.

Comfort Publishing and the author sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). Mr. Anderson specializes in writing books for boys who are reluctant readers (as he was earlier in life). He makes his books interesting, full of action and some danger, and there is always an underlying message in his words for the young ones who read them.

Peyton is new to the base, but it doesn't take him long to find a couple of new friends. He wants to practice to be a Ranger, and he talks them into working out on the course with him. It's good exercise and all is going well until they decide to go on a mission, like all Rangers do. That's when they find out that terrorists are planning to steal something from the secured Army base.

Peyton waits too long to tell his father and the boys suddenly find themselves on their own...

The story is busy, the boys have lessons to learn about the Rangers and life in general, and the reader will keep going to see what is going to happen next. Why not pick up a copy of this book for your young reader, especially since we are so close to 911 again.

If you have a child who is worried about how they look, this is the book for them. If they have freckles, wear glasses, are overweight or are losing hair from chemotherapy, they are still going to notice Lulu has worse problems. And she doesn't think they're problems; they are just enhancements to her physical skills and bring joy to her life!

Mr. Pulley writes a very cute story about a young girl with odd features who takes every day at a time and thinks the ten oddities are attributes. Lulu will make you smile.

Why not get a copy today and share it with your child. If they have low self-esteem, this book teaches them that being different makes you special, not weird. Just look at Lulu!

Samantha has a weird ability that she wishes she didn't have. Everyone around her thinks she's crazy. She's even been put in a mental hospital for a while. But it didn't make it go away. In her own words: "Christ, she was tired of waking up dead."

Mr. Mayer provided me with a copy of his book for review (thank you). This is a paranormal mystery and I found it a very good read. The book is available on Smashwords and Amazon.

Sam lives alone in a very private setting to avoid having any problems with other people. If she deals with her problems alone, it's better. She has psychic powers she wishes she could shed. She does want to help people, though, so she has to endure her visions. The worst part is that she goes within the victim at her time of death and feels all the pain and suffering. Knowing there is a serial killer out there doesn't make it better.

When she tries to report a death to local police station, she almost gets thrown out because no death has been reported. When it is, she becomes a suspect. The only person who believes her is Brandt, the cop working on serial killings. And she scares even him.

The story moves fast, the author's words flow well, and I found the story intriguing. The ending is thrilling. Why not grab a copy for yourself and see what you think?

Filled with simple stories for small ones with illustrations by Luana Rinaldo, the books are charming. The thick pages mean young ones can turn the pages again and again without harm.

Little ones will enjoy a book they can read or play with. And they both are cool Halloween themed books. Why not include them as a special gift to your trick or treater?

I got my copy of this book from Edelweiss and Mira for review (thank you). It will be published in October, so add it to your TBR list. If you've read others in this series, I know you must be waiting impatiently for this story.

Taylor is still angry with Baldwin for not telling her he had a son. He might not have been aware of it at the first, but when he didn't tell her right away, she took offense. She can't discuss it with him now because her voice isn't working. The doctor insists she's OK physically, so it must be a mental block.

This mistrust is driving a wedge between them and Taylor doesn't know how to stop it. When Memphis calls and offers her the use of his castle in Scotland (he will be working), she decides to go. It might not be the smartest thing to put herself around a man who wants her, but she feels she needs some time alone to get herself back together. Besides, there is psychologist there who can continue her treatment and help her get her voice back again.

I was very impressed by how this author wove his story. He takes two separate events and weaves them into a final confrontation that will send chills up and down your spine. There is a dark horse in this group of characters that is pure evil.

The words flow well and I read the book in one evening. I had to know how it was going to end! If you want a good thriller with psychological manipulation, this is the book for you. It's a very good read.

This story is filled with ghosts of the past. You hear the voices of five women talk about one man's influence on their lives...

Simon and Schuster will be publishing this book in mid-September. I grabbed an egalley for review (thank you). Check with your local bookstore to grab a copy.

The heart of this story is set in the Appalachian hills during the depression. Everyone is struggling. Nellie is working in a soup kitchen with her mother when she sees Hobb. She falls immediately and madly in love with him. He marries her and takes her home. Her mother tells her she sees death in her tea leaves and begs her not to go, but she's in love...

One of the main points this author seemed to be making was that you should not love a man so completely, you don't save any love for yourself. That will eventually destroy you.

Hobb was not a good man. He was an even worse husband. And while he was the catalyst for the tragedy that happened, he's not the most important part of this story. The important parts are the women who were involved.

Each woman has her own segment of the book and tells her unique story of the life she's led. These stories merge together to make a complete life circle around Nellie and Hobb's relationship. I found this a fascinating way to present the story and I enjoyed reading this book. It's not a cheery book by any means, but it's about life as it is, not a fairy tale. The ghosts just add to the flavor of the story and the mystery of Black Mountain.

This story has stuck with me after I finished reading it. It makes you think. Why not get a copy for yourself and see if it does that to you?

Carrot Top Cake

2 cups white whole wheat flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 large eggs

1 1/4 cups sugar

1/2 cup canola oil

1/4 cup orange juice

1 1/2 cups grated carrot

1 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat the over to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, baling powder and salt in a medium bowl; whisk until blended.

In a separate bowl, beat eggs and sugar with a wooden spoon.

Add oil and orange juice, then combine with flour mixture.

Fold in carrots and walnuts.

Divide batter into cake pans or cupcake liners makes about 18 cupcakes) and bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Transfer to a wire rack and let it cool completely

CouponsToTroops It is our goal to spread awareness about overseas military families being able to use coupons that are expired, up to 6 months past the expiration. But it is also our goal to get coupons right into the hands of those military families as quickly as possible. We have a growing list of military families on our contact list who are interested in receiving coupons and we will match up anyone requesting a military family to send their coupons to. To request a family, all anyone has to do is send an email to us at admin@couponstotroops.com and we will put them in touch with a military family.

We think there are several advantages to our program compared to others out there.

For our military families, the coupons are being received by so much quicker when they are sent directly to them, than when coupons are sent to a collection point in the US and then need to be repackaged up before they are mailed overseas. As it is, sending an envelope directly overseas can take up to a few weeks, but when you add in the extra time to get them to a collection point, and the time to get them sorted and repackaged and then mailed overseas, it can be over a month before the coupons are in the hands of the families who need them.

For our senders, they'll know that their coupons are being received and that they are appreciated as they have that one-on-one contact with the family they are sending to. And best of all, there is no additional cost to send the coupons directly overseas, as it is the same exact postage cost as if you were mailing across town.

Grilled Vegetables
4 servings

4 c. sliced fresh summer squash and/or zucchini
4 c. sliced sweet onions, such as Vidalia
3 to 4 Tbsp. olive or canola oil
1 t 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste

Toss all ingredients in a large bowl until vegetables are evenly coated with oil and vinegar.

Spray a grill basket with nonstick cooking spray. Place on grill rack over hot coals.

Pour vegetables into basket, replace grill lid, and cook 15 to 25 minutes until vegetables reach desired doneness, stirring every 4 to 5 minutes

Quick and Easy Manicotti

Ingredients:

1 package (8 ounces) manicotti shells

1 pound ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion

1 jar (26 ounces) spaghetti sauce

14 pieces string cheese

1-1/2 cups (6 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:

Cook manicotti according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Spread half of the meat sauce into a greased 13-in. x 9-in. x 2-in. baking dish. Drain manicotti; stuff each shell with a piece of string cheese. Place over meat sauce; top with remaining sauce. Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Bake, uncovered, for 10 minutes longer or until the cheese is melted. Yield: 6-8 servings

French Onion Potato Salad

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups potatoes, cubed and cooked

2 tablespoons cider vinegar

1 cup diced celery

1 cup French onion dip

1 teaspoon granulated sugar

2 teaspoons salt

1 small onion, chopped

2 to 3 eggs, hard boiled

Directions:

Sprinkle warm potatoes with salt, sugar and vinegar. Toss lightly. Add onion, celery and eggs (mashed or sliced, your preference). Carefully blend in onion dip. Chill several hours or overnight to blend flavors.Sprinkle with paprika. Serve cold.

Sloppy Joe Casserole

8 ounces shell or elbow macaroni
1 envelope sloppy Joe mix
1 pound ground beef, cooked and drained
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 cup water
16 ounces cottage cheese
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
Cook pasta and drain. Brown meat and add sloppy Joe mix, tomato paste, tomato sauce and 1 cup water. In a greased 2 1/2-quart dish layer half the pasta, half the cottage cheese, half the meat sauce. Repeat. Top with cheese. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-50 minutes.

Chocolate Chip Swirl Cake
INGREDIENTS
1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® white cake mix
Water, vegetable oil and egg whites called for on cake mix box
3/4 cup miniature semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup chocolate-flavor syrup
1 container Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting
Additional chocolate-flavor syrup, if desired

Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Generously grease, or spray with baking spray with flour, bottom of 13x9-inch pan.
Make cake batter as directed on box--except stir in 1/2 cup of the chocolate chips. Reserve 1 cup of the batter. Pour remaining batter into pan. Stir 1/4 cup chocolate syrup into reserved batter. Drop by generous tablespoonfuls randomly in 6 to 8 mounds onto batter in pan. Cut through batters with spatula or knife in S-shaped curves in one continuous motion. Turn pan 1/4 turn, and repeat cutting for swirled design.
Bake 33 to 37 minutes (36 to 40 minutes for dark or nonstick pan) or until toothpick inserted in center of chocolate comes out clean. Run knife around sides of pan to loosen cake. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Stir remaining 1/4 cup chocolate chips into frosting. Spread frosting over top of cake; drizzle with additional chocolate syrup. Store loosely covered at room temperature

1 1/2 lb. ground beef
1 Tbsp. butter
2 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 lb. cottage cheese
8 oz. cream cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
1/3 cup chopped scallions
1 Tbsp. green bell pepper, chopped
1 (7 oz.) pkg. spaghetti, cooked
2 Tbsp. butter, melted

Brown beef in butter; add tomato sauce, salt and pepper, remove from heat. In separate bowl, combine cottage cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, onions and green pepper. In 2-quart casserole spread half the spaghetti; cover with cheese mixture.

Add remaining spaghetti; pour melted butter on top. Spread meat sauce over top. Chill. Remove from refrigerator 20 minutes before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.

CREAMY POTATO SALAD Makes 12 servings.

1/4 cup chopped tarragon, optional
1 bunch thinly sliced radishes
3 tbs white or red wine vinegar
1/2 cup low fat sour cream
3/4 cup roughly chopped flat leaf parsley
4 stalks thinly sliced celery
1/4 cup light mayonnaise
3 pounds small potatoes

PLACE potatoes in a pot. Add enough water to cover and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp salt, reduce heat and simmer until tender. Drain and run under cold water to cool. Cut into quarters.
IN A BOWL, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, vinegar and 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper. Add potatoes, celery and radishes and toss to coat. Fold in parsley and tarragon, if using, then SERVE...

In a large bowl, combine dry onion soup mix and ground beef.Form into six patties shaping around diced mozzarella cheese cut into six cubes.Broil until done and serve on toasted hamburger buns.

35 vanilla wafers, crushed (about 1-1/4 cups)
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 cups frozen vanilla yogurt, softened
1 pkg. (3 oz.) lemon flavorgelatin
2 cups thawed whipped topping
2-1/4 cups mixed fresh berries (sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)

Mix wafer crumbs and butter; press onto bottom of plastic wrap-lined 8-inch square pan. Freeze until ready to use.

Beat yogurt and dry gelatin mix in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add whipped topping; mix well. Spoon over crust.

Freeze 4 hours. Use plastic wrap to remove dessert from pan before cutting to serve. Top with berries

Mistress of the Storm by M L Welsh

Verity is not very happy when her grandmother she's never met before moves in and takes over her attic room, displacing her. What a witch!

David Fickling Books (a division of Random House) sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It's currently in the market and you can get a copy at your local bookstore.

Verity is different from her youngest sister and wonders if any man will ever be interested in such a "Plain Jane". But when she finds a strange man crying in the library and he gives her an ancient red book, her life changes and she doesn't have time to worry about that anymore...

This story is full of action, danger, and skulduggery and reads quickly. Verity doesn't understand exactly what she is up against, but she must stop it. The setting is a small sea village in the UK that makes it almost eerie to begin with and the various troubles floating under the surface of normal all come to a boiling point with the arrival of Verity's grandmother.

Why not jump into this adventure and see how you would have acted under such adverse conditions. I was rooting for Verity all the way through the story.

Taco Salad

Ingredients:
1 pound lean ground beef
1 (1.25 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
1 (16 ounce) can chili beans
1 (16 ounce) bottle French dressing
1 head iceberg lettuce
1 (14.5 ounce) package tortilla chips
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1 cup chopped tomatoes
4 tablespoons sour cream
1/2 cup prepared salsa

Directions:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef and
drain excess fat. Stir in the taco seasoning, chili beans and
French-style dressing. Fill the dressing bottle 2/3 full of water and
add to the skillet. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15
minutes. Crush the bag of chips, open the bag, and toss the broken chips
into a large bowl with the lettuce, cheese and tomatoes. When the meat
mixture is done, combine it with the lettuce, tomatoes, chips and mix
well. Then, add salsa and sour cream

The Mistaken Masterpiece by Michael D Beil

Father Julian hires the Blazers to help him authenticate a painting and an autographed baseball. Who knew what kind of mess it would turn into?

Alfred A Knopf sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It's the third story in The Red Blazer Girls series, and the first one I've read. You can pick up a copy at your local bookstore now.

Livvy is still around and manages to break Sophie's nose during swimming practice. Sophie has a celebrity crush that Raf doesn't much appreciate. And the mystery of the painting's identity is larger than anticipated with many different facets involved.

It will keep the young one's attention and entertain them with the tale of Sophie's well intentioned but often silly escapades. Don't forget the others out in the series. It's written for ages 10 and up.

When Life Gives You O.J. by Erica S Perl

She wants a dog. She wants a dog very badly. Does she want one enough to pretend an orange juice container is a "dog" and care for it?

Alfred A Knopf sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It's currently available for sale at your local bookstore.

This story really touched me. The author has a real talent for making her characters come to life and revealing how grandparents and grandchildren develop a relationship.

Zelly is adjusting to her grandfather living with them; he's a bit weird. But he notices that she really, really wants a dog. So he gives her an OJ bottle and tells her to treat it like she would a pet; take it for walks, feed it, clean up its poop, etc. Soon the whole family is reminding her of her duties to OJ.

This is a fun story to read, not boring in the least. And pretty soon you're beginning to worry that maybe Zelly isn't mature enough for a dog. Just keep reading, she has a few more adventures up her sleeve...
